What is a Unique Selling Proposition?

A unique selling proposition or USP, is a differentiation strategy that will set you apart from the competition.

In order to implement your USP, you need to follow the following steps:

1. Describe your target market

Before you begin to market your business, you need to identify who your target market is. In identifying your market, you need to be as specific as possible.

2. Explain the problem you solve

What solution will they get when they purchase from you. What challenges does your target market have, that your business, your service, or your product can solve.

3. List the distinctive benefits that your product offers

At this point you need to identify at least three things that is unique to your company / business / service or product. This should tell the customer why they should choose you over your competitors. Simply, the benefit(s) that sets you apart from your competition.

4. Define your promise to your clients

An important part of your USP, is making a pledge to your clients / customers. Write down this promise you make to your clients in this step.

Try to get all of this into a single paragraph. It will take some time, but it will be worth it. Now it’s time to publish your Unique Selling proposition on your website, flyers etc.
